WINDER - Test drives aren't supposed to be this fun.
For six hours Saturday, bicycle enthusiasts will be allowed to ride freely in Ft. Yargo State Park on brand-new, top-of-the-line bikes. The event, dubbed Bicycle Demo Day, is free.
Organizers call it a chance to ride the word's best bikes for nothing.
Riders can attempt the park's 12-mile trail for a more rugged experience, or stick to the park's paved roads. It's open to expert riders and novices alike.
Sponsored by Dacula's Apalachee Cycle, Demo Day will feature 2008 models by Trek, Gary Fisher and LeMond road bicycles. A $25 deposit is required, which will be returned that day.
The event will also feature children's bikes.
"This is an event for the whole family," said Bruce Ray of Apalachee Cycle. "We want to promote cycling as an activity anyone can enjoy."
Eric Bentley, Park Manager at Ft. Yargo, called Demo Day the first event of its kind to hit his park's network of trails. He said there's no limit to the number of riders who can attend.
Ft. Yargo is located at 210 S. Broad St. in Winder.
"I want the general public to be able to come and see what the sport has to offer," said Bentley, "but also I want everybody to have a good taste of what mountain biking at Ft. Yargo is."
