LAWRENCEVILLE - It's difficult to pick up trash in the snow.
So with the threat of flurries looming this morning, organizers for a litter pick-up at Lake Lanier have decided to postpone their event until next week. Vicki Barnhorst, the executive director of the Lake Lanier Association, said the event originally scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Lake Lanier Islands and Resort has been rescheduled for Jan. 26. It will be held at the same time and place. "You can't see the trash when it snows," Barnhorst said. "I think it would be a good day to stay in." Next week, trash collection will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Barnhorst said. Volunteers will focus on the Cocktail Cove area of Lake Lanier. The association has been holding a number of cleanups, called shore sweeps, while the lake level has been low due to the drought. On Jan. 5, volunteers at a cleanup at Flat Creek removed seven pickup truck-loads of waste. "Quite a lot of trash has been collected already by volunteers," Barnhorst said. "It's working." Future cleanups are being scheduled for Two Mile Creek, Thompson Creek, Van Pugh, Yellow Creek, Bald Ridge Creek, McEver Bridge and Flat Creek.
