Lawrenceville considering raising salaries for mayor, council

LAWRENCEVILLE - The Lawrenceville City Council is considering raising salaries for the mayor and council members, but the raises would not take effect until their next terms if re-elected or for their successors.

The council voted Monday to discuss the raises at its Jan. 16 work session after reviewing salaries for elected officials in other cities in the metro Atlanta area and to vote at its Feb. 4 regular meeting. It is not allowed to raise salaries for the sitting mayor and council.

The salary comparisons for selected cities in Gwinnett, Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb, Hall and other counties were compiled by Lawrenceville City Clerk Bob Baroni's staff at the request of the council. Baroni said salaries for Lawrenceville's mayor and council have not been raised since the early 1990s.

Lawrenceville Mayor Rex Millsap's salary is $9,600 a year. Members of the Lawrenceville council earn $7,200 annually.

According to the salary report, the mayor in nearby Duluth with a population of 22,122 and an annual budget of $44 million makes $9,600 a year, and council members draw $6,000 a year. By comparison, Lawrenceville has a population of 22,397 and a budget of $97 million, more than twice as large as Duluth's.

The mayor of Snellville, which has a population of 15,351 and a yearly budget of $17 million, has an annual salary of $6,000. Snellville council salaries are $4,000 a year. Lilburn's mayor is paid $5,900 and council members $4,040 a year. The report lists Lilburn's population as 11,307 and cites an annual budget of $6 million.

Sugar Hill, with a population of 11,399 and an annual budget of $23 million, pays its mayor $5,400 and its council members $3,600 a year. The mayor pro tem earns $4,500 a year.

The mayor of Alpharetta in North Fulton earns $30,000 a year. Alpharetta council members have a salary of half that amount at $15,000. Alpharetta has 34,854 residents and an annual budget of $75 million.

The figures for East Point, a city in South Fulton with 39,595 residents and an annual budget of $80 million, are $12,200 for the mayor's salary and $9,200 for council members a year.

Decatur in DeKalb County pays its mayor $6,000 and council members $4,800 a year. Decatur has a population of 18,147, and the city's annual budget is $17 million.

Marietta, Cobb County's largest city with a population of 58,748 and an annual budget of $49.5 million, compensates its mayor at $18,000 and council members at $13,000 yearly.

Smyrna, another city in Cobb, provides it mayor with a salary of $20,400 a year. Council members receive $15,300. Smyrna has 40,999 residents and an annual budget of $91 million.

Gainesville in Hall County pays its mayor $16,200 and its council members $14,700 a year. With a population of 25,578, Gainesville has an annual budget of $107 million.

In other action, Millsaps administered oaths of office to council members Bob Clark and P.K. Martin, who were re-elected to second two-year terms. Martin was chosen by the council as mayor pro tem for 2008. Clark served as mayor pro tem last year.
