Buford re-elects Beard as commission chair

BUFORD - The Buford City Commission Monday night re-elected Phillip Beard as its chairman and Chris Burge as its vice chairman for 2008 here at its monthly meeting.

Beard is beginning his 33rd year of service with the board, having served about 20 of those years as chairman. Last year, he was re-elected without opposition to serve another four-year term. Beard, along with School Board members Daren Perkins and Leon Johnson, were administered the oath of office Monday night by the city attorney.

Burge has been serving on the board since 1992. In addition, city department heads were reappointed for 2008.

It also was announced that the commission held a special called meeting Dec. 20 to approve an ordinance calling for a special city election to determine whether to issue general obligation bonds not to exceed $10 million for construction of a multi-purpose facility for the Buford City Schools Board of Education. Beard said city residents will have the opportunity to vote on this school bond referendum on Feb. 5 during the "Super Tuesday" presidential primary election in Georgia.

Four city employees were presented with service award plaques and watches at the meeting. Honored were: Cleveland Smith (31 years), Raymond Henderson (26 years), Kimberlee Wolfe (22 years), and Lamar Sudderth (21 years).
