Man shoots two police officers
Cops in stable condition, were attempting to serve warrant

SUWANEE - Two Gwinnett police officers were shot Thursday night while attempting to serve a warrant on a Suwanee man, police said.

Both officers were at Gwinnett Medical Center late Thursday in stable condition, police said. They are members of the Gwinnett County Police Department's Northside Precinct.

Investigators had yet to notify family and could not release the wounded officers' names.

The shooting happened about 8:20 p.m. at a home near Suwanee Dam Road.

"As (police) approached the house, the subject opened fire, striking the two officers," said Gwinnett police spokesman David Schiralli during a press conference at North Gwinnett High School.

The suspect later barricaded himself inside his home. A Gwinnett police SWAT team unit was still attempting to apprehend the suspect at about 10:30 p.m., Schiralli said.

Police did not immediately release the suspect's name or his address.

Schiralli was uncertain of what charges were specified in the warrant the officers were attempting to serve.

It was unclear what led the suspect to shoot at police, he said.

Witnesses reported the suspect "used a shotgun, a handgun and possibly a rifle" in his attack on police, Schiralli said.
