Attempted home break-in prompts school to lock down

LAWRENCEVILLE - Administrators at Craig Elementary locked the school's exterior doors Tuesday afternoon after they were notified that Gwinnett County police were searching for two men who reportedly attempted to burgle a home less than a mile away.

The "soft lock down" was in effect from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m., said Jorge Quintana, a spokesman for Gwinnett County Public Schools.

"Staff members and students were allowed to move around inside the school," Quintana said. "The lock down did not interrupt instruction."

Although authorities did not believe students were in immediate danger, a school resource officer advised that the Brookwood cluster school be locked down as a safety precaution, Quintana said.

Gwinnett County police spokesman David Schiralli said a woman who lives on the 1700 block of Webb Gin House Road called 911 to report the attempted break-in. The men suspected of the crime fled when police arrived, Schiralli said.

After searching the area, police found and arrested the men, Schiralli said.

No further information was available Tuesday afternoon.
