Norcross pool to open next week

NORCROSS - Even though spring won't begin for a month, officials are hoping kids will splash into the county's newest pool next week.

An indoor lap pool and an instructional pool will open Tuesday at West Gwinnett Park at 4488 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Norcross.

"We are really excited about the aquatics center," Commissioner Bert Nasuti said. "People are really fired up about it around here,"

Jim Cyrus, the county's aquatics manager, said the indoor facility is similar to the Mountain Park Park Aquatic Center, although the West Gwinnett facility is even larger.

After working closely with the high school swimming and diving program, Cyrus said the West Gwinnett competition pool was designed with room for 750 spectators. Mountain Park's pool has 500 seats.

Cyrus said the county also has plans to develop a summer swim league for the community.

In May, officials will open an outdoor leisure pool, which has 10,000 square feet of features for the kids, including two water slides, a water channel and spray cannons.

But Cyrus said he believes the aquatics center will be full before summer begins.

"We have such a large demand for indoor programs now between lap swimming and water aerobics," he said, adding that seniors and other organizations use

the county's four other indoor pools for therapy as well.

"It's another in the line of monster facilities that we are opening," Cyrus said of the $16 million park and aquatic center project. "It's really a good testament to the sales tax. It allows people to see what their money is going toward."

In addition to the 3 p.m. ribbon cutting Tuesday, officials will celebrate a grand opening for the center on Saturday. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the community can enjoy free pool admission, kids activities and water aerobics and lifeguard demonstrations. The event will also include a lacrosse game at 9 a.m. and a job fair for summer lifeguards.
