BILOXI, Miss. - Jeff Campbell posted a hat trick for the Gladiators and Lou Dickenson notched a pair of goals to lead Gwinnett past the Mississippi Sea Wolves 6-2 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Saturday night.
Gwinnett improved to 32-15-5 on the season with the win and hosts Augusta today at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
For the second consecutive game, Gwinnett jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an early first-period goal. Campbell notched his 16th goal of the season for Gwinnett, ripping a slap shot from the top of the left wing circle over the shoulder of Mississippi netminder Ryan Munce just three minutes into the contest. Jeff Mason collected an assist on the goal.
Mississippi tied the game at 1-1 at 5:05 of the first period. Jason Tejchma was able to beat Gladiators netminder Craig Kowalski from 20-feet out for the goal.
Brad Schell's fourth goal of the season regained the lead for Gwinnett at 12:21 of the first period. Collecting a lose puck in the slot, Schell ripped a snap shot past Munce for the marker for Gwinnett. Dickenson and Campbell assisted on the goal.
Dickenson scored his 24th goal of the season for the Gladiators at 12:37 of the second to give Gwinnett a 3-1 lead. Dickenson walked into the Mississippi zone untouched and ripped a slap shot from the top of the left wing circle over the shoulder of Munce for the marker. Campbell collected an assist, pushing the puck to Dickenson through the neutral zone.
Gwinnett ran its lead to 4-1 on Campbell's second goal of the contest just 3:13 into the third period. Working in on a 2-on-1 break with Jamie Milam, Campbell was able to roll the puck past Munce for the marker. The goal came shorthanded. Andy Brandt also had an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.
Campbell completed the hat trick with his third goal of the night at 8:45 of the third period. Parked in the slot, Campbell ripped a snapshot past Munce to give Gwinnett a 5-1 lead on Mississippi. Schell and Mason notched the assists on the goal for Gwinnett.
After replacing Munce with netminder Morgan Cey, Mississippi posted its second goal of the contest at 10:06 of the third period. Kvapil was able to beat Kowalski from the slot for the marker. Matt Deschamps and Mike Hartwick collected the assists on the goal.
Dickenson's second goal of the contest rounded out the scoring. In the slot, Dickenson took an outlet pass from Schell out the right wing corner and rolled the puck past Cey for the marker. The goal came at 12:09 of the third period for the Gladiators.
Kowalski posted the win for Gwinnett with 31 saves, his 20th victory of the year for the Gladiators.
Gwinnett went 0-for-5 on the power play in the win while keeping the Sea Wolves off the board on the power play on six chances.
