Snellville woman dies in crash; man faces possible DUI charges

DULUTH - A Snellville woman died at the scene of a three-vehicle crash Wednesday night on Pleasant Hill Road.

Cathy Jones, 41, was killed when her 2006 Jeep Liberty was struck by another vehicle driven by a man who appeared to be intoxicated, police said.

The 9:10 p.m. crash occurred on Pleasant Hill Road near Interstate 85.

Police have charged Dan Darden III, 26, of Duluth with first-degree vehicular homicide and failure to maintain lane. Toxicology results are pending, but investigators believe Darden was driving under the influence of alcohol, said Gwinnett police spokesman Officer David Schiralli.

Darden was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with serious injuries. He is expected to recover but could face DUI charges when toxicology results are final, Schiralli said.

Police said Darden was traveling southbound on I-85 in a 2003 S-10 truck. He exited onto Pleasant Hill Road but failed to stop, Schiralli said.

Darden hit a 2007 Chevy Colorado that was stopped at the end of the exit ramp, then continued across the roadway, striking Jones' Jeep while she was stopped at a traffic light, police said.

A female passenger in Jones' Jeep was also hospitalized. She is expected to recover, Schiralli said.

Police said no one in the Chevy Colorado was transported for treatment.

Medical personnel pronounced Jones dead at the scene from injuries she sustained in the crash, Schiralli said.
