Wolves qualify 9 to state with 2nd place finish

MADISON - In the toughest area in Class AA, the Wesleyan wrestling team managed to qualify nine wrestlers for the state meet.

The Wolves finished second in the Area 3-AA team standings on Saturday at Morgan County behind Lovett, which qualified 12 wrestlers.

"The nine that we are taking I expect to do very well," Wesleyan coach Jeff Plunk said. "It's great to have five area champions. I feel all of the guys that we've got going can place."

Wesleyan got area titles from Brooks Spraetz (103 pounds), Josh Jeng (119), Colin Genthert (152), Michael Douglas (189) and Kelby Smith (215).

Tyler Hedieger (135) and David Kaszycki (160) took second. Kyle Hagenau (171) placed third and Hampton Wilson (145) was fourth. Wesleyan placed second at the state meet last year, but it will be hard for the Wolves to duplicate that kind of success with just nine wrestlers. The good news is that all nine that they are sending have a great shot at placing.

"I know it can be done with nine," Plunk said. "I was just hoping to sneak a couple of others in there."

Scottie Forrester was Buford's only area champion, winning the 145-pound weight class. Tia Forrester also placed third and qualified for state at 103, picking up her 150th career win in the process.
