WINDER - Promoters say this half-marathon isn't short on thrills.
If running 13 miles through the woods is your idea of a good time, that is.
On March 1, the XTERRA Trail Race Series will come stomping into Winder for the second annual "Thrills In The Hills" half-marathon.
The 8 a.m. race is expected to draw up to 450 cardio buffs to Ft. Yargo State Park. The half-marathon is unique, in that it follows a scenic off-road course throughout the park's winding mountain bike trails, organizers said.
Registration fees are $30 until Thursday and $40 thereafter. Runners can register online at www.active.com.
The race is broken into categories and is open to all runners, promoter Tim Schroer said.
"We encourage anyone and everyone," Schroer said. "Our youngest has been 14 and our oldest was 73."
The top three finishers in each category will be awarded medals. Walkers who can keep a pace of 16 miles per hour are also encourage to compete.
The race kicks off at 8:30 a.m. sharp, and official timing stops at 3:30 p.m.
"Fort Yargo is a great course," Schroer said. "Anyone looking for an off-road, trail race and adventure - we have what you're looking for."
