Aurora offers comedy for Valentine's Day weekend

If your Valentine's Day plans - or lack thereof - have landed you in the doghouse, redeem yourself with a special V-Day edition of the Aurora Theatre's Funny Fridays.

The theater, which has been presenting comedy in conjunction with Uptown Comedy Corner, has added a last-minute show at 8 p.m. today. Improv group The Blacktop Circus will perform, followed by a set of stand-up from members of the troupe. Comedian Swift will host.

The show will be presented in the Discovery Point Studio Theatre at the Aurora Theatre, 128 Pike St., Lawrenceville. With seating for only 90 people, the theater provides an intimate comedy club feel.

Lionheart gets literary

A one-woman play written and performed by Gwinnett County teacher Joanie McElroy takes center stage this weekend at the Lionheart Theatre Company. "Thus Spoke the Mockingbird" examines the life of iconic writer Harper Lee, author of "To Kill a Mockingbird."

McElroy's play takes a look at Lee's childhood, her relationship with friend and fellow writer Truman Capote and her desire to lead a private life.

'Menopause' returns

Atlanta's 14th Street Playhouse is preparing for a limited-run engagement of "Menopause: The Musical" Feb. 22 to April 20.

The production takes a humorous look at life after 40 with a series of tunes parodying songs from the 1960s and '70s.

Shows are at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Matinee performances will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $42.50 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 404-733-4738.
