Prep roundup: Mill Creek boys move on in 7-AAAAA hoops tourney

SUWANEE - Mill Creek advanced in the Region 7-AAAAA boys basketball tournament on Monday with a 61-49 victory over Duluth.

The Hawks, who play Peachtree Ridge on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Collins Hill, had four double-figure scorers, led by Chris Avery's 13 points.

Chase Anderson, Manu Ogbueni and Zach Baker contributed 10 points each for Mill Creek (9-15).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Buford 64, Creekview 46

CANTON - Buford's boys moved into a matchup with top-seeded Greater Atlanta Christian with a 64-46 win over host Creekview on Monday in the Region 6-AA tournament.

The Wolves, who have won three of their last four, play GAC today at 5:30 p.m.

Zac Lynn had 15 points to lead Buford (9-16), Jakar Bridges had 14 points, Jeremy Moore scored 13 and Twoey Hosch scored 10.

OLM 50, Providence 47

FAIRBURN - Providence Christian's season ended in the first round of the Region 5-A tournament on Monday with a 50-47 loss to Our Lady of Mercy.

Carter Rice led the Stars (10-16) with 15 points, Westley Hinton had 12 points and Jesse Meier added 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Shiloh 61, Meadowcreek 55

SNELLVILLE - Despite a huge game from Meadowcreek's Genea Williams, Shiloh advanced in the Region 8-AAAAA tournament on Monday with a 61-55 win over the Mustangs.

Williams scored 34 of her team's 55 points while Shiloh had four double-figure scorers, led by Nicole Fifer's 18 and Brooke Lane's 12. The Generals (3-23) also got 10 points each from LaChae Brown and Nikki Sutton.

Shiloh plays Berkmar Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at South Gwinnett.

Peachtree Ridge 47, Forsyth Central 45

SUWANEE - The Peachtree Ridge girls basketball team kept its state tournament hopes alive with a 47-45 win over Forsyth Central on Monday in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament.

Emily Wortman scored 15 points (on 5 of 8 shooting from 3-point range) and D'Atra Sawyer had 11 points (3 of 7 from 3-point range) to lead the victory. The Lions (14-11) play host Collins Hill today at 7 p.m. with a state tournament berth at stake.

Dacula 64, Rockdale 39

DACULA - Eve Machovec led four double-figure scorers with 13 points as the host Dacula girls defeated Rockdale 64-39 in the Region 8-AAAA tournament, advancing to play top seed Clarke Central on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

China Vinson had 12 points for the Falcons (11-13), Breanna Overby had 11 points and Sara Beth White contributed 10 points.

Buford 60, Creekview 27

BUFORD - Blanche Alverson scored 18 points to lead three double-figure scorers on Monday as Buford defeated Creekview 60-27 in the first round of the Region 6-AA tournament.

The Wolves (21-5) also got 12 points each from Sara Dempsey and Jocelyn Danley. They move on to play Pace Academy in the next round on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Greater Atlanta Christian.

Loganville 64, Eastside 43

DACULA - Loganville opened the Region 8-AAAA tournament on Monday with a 64-43 win over Eastside, improving to 20-5 on the season.

Tichina Chatman had 15 points and Katie Martin scored 11 for Loganville, which plays Heritage on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

BOYS SOCCER

North Gwinnett 2, Newnan 0

SUWANEE - North Gwinnett defeated Newnan 2-0 in the opening round of the LongHorn Steakhouse Invitational on Monday with the help of a shutout from goalkeeper Patrick McHugh.

Korey Daigle and Tyler Gutzman had unassisted goals for the Bulldogs.

North Cobb 3, Brookwood 1

ACWORTH - Fourth-ranked North Cobb defeated sixth-ranked Brookwood 3-1 on Monday in the opening game for both teams.

The Broncos' only goal came from John Yang off a Chris Goldsmith assist. Theo Yang and Joey Deloney also played well in the Brookwood attack, while Brice Eidson, Trevor Watson and Jamie Deal stood out on defense.

GAC 4, Westminster 1

NORCROSS - Greater Atlanta Christian, the defending state champion in Class AA/A, defeated Westminster, last year's state champ in AAA, in Monday's season opener, 4-1.

Chris Thomas scored three goals for the Spartans and Stewart Abrahart added a goal, while Eric Fletcher, Zack Johnson and Aldyn Royes had assists.

Providence 1, Whitfield Academy 1

LILBURN - Providence Christian, ranked third in Class AA/A, opened its season with a 1-1 tie against Whitfield Academy on Monday.

The Stars fell behind 22 minutes into the match, but scored near the midway point of the second half for a tie. Brent Hansen scored the equalizer for Providence off an Erik Terry assist.

Providence goalkeeper Zach Gray made 11 saves.

Hebron 2, Mt. Paran 1

DACULA - Senior captain Baxter Russell scored two goals as Hebron Christian defeated Mt. Paran 2-1 on Monday in a season opener cut three minutes short when the game was stopped because of an injury.

Freshman Austin Pinto added an assist while fellow ninth-grader John Foley made seven saves, allowing only a late goal in his first game at goalkeeper.

GIRLS SOCCER

North Gwinnett 6, Newnan 0

SUWANEE - North Gwinnett rolled past Newnan 6-0 on Monday, the first night of the Bulldogs' LongHorn Steakhouse Invitational.

Danielle Au led North with two goals and an assist and Kaitlin Baker added a goal and two assists. Halie Watts, Laura Serres and Kelly Penston scored a goal each, while Abbi Edwards had an assist.

North goalkeeper Rebecca Ingram posted the shutout.

Brookwood 9, North Cobb 0

ACWORTH - Brookwood opened its girls soccer season with a 9-0 rout of host North Cobb on Monday behind two goals each from Erin Tate and Kayla Brown.

The Broncos also got goals from Haley Arnold, Ashley Gray, Krista Barikos, Tayler Graves and Melanie Thompson. Kelly McDaniel and Caroline Mellard shared time at goalkeeper for the shutout.

BOYS TENNIS

Parkview 3, North Gwinnett 2

SUWANEE - Thomas Cook, Ethan Motz and Lance Mengel won in singles on Monday as Parkview defeated North Gwinnett 3-2 in the season opener for both teams.

South Gwinnett 4, West Forsyth 1

SNELLVILLE - Cody Post and Sudhir Reddy won in singles on Monday to lead South Gwinnett past West Forsyth 4-1.

The Comets swept the doubles points with Andrew Pridgen and Trevor Johnson at No. 1 and Omar Cormack and Emerami Pepe at No. 2.

GIRLS TENNIS

North Gwinnett 3, Parkview 2

LILBURN - North Gwinnett swept the singles matches on Monday, winning its season opener 3-2 over host Parkview.

Nicole Koch, Chelsea Koch and Maggie Dudacek won in singles for the Bulldogs. Parkview's got wins from Samantha Marks and Anna Fluevog at No. 1 singles and Cristina Holt and Rebecca Streich at No. 2.

WRESTLING

Mill Creek sweeps

HOSCHTON - The Hawks wrapped up its dual meet season by sweeping a tri-match late Saturday, beating Stephens County 48-24 and North Oconee 49-18.

Tyler Beck, Aaron Dumond, Mitch Loving, Augustus Appling, T. Adams, Taylor Lacy, Nick Voss, Ryan Gasaway, Tommy Caputo, Jordan Fitch and Cameron Fowler all had a big day for Mill Creek, which improved to 19-14 in dual meets for the season.

The Hawks will next take to the mat for the Area 7-AAAAA traditional format meet this weekend at North Gwinnett.

North takes second at Vidalia

VIDALIA - The Bulldogs finished as runner-up in the 16-team field at the Sweet Onion Tournament in Vidalia last weekend.

North had 204 team points, just 15 points short of champion Jefferson.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs were four individual weight class champions, including Greg Epps, who won the 103-pound weight class, Jamal Shelton, who placed first at 130 pounds, Travis Sheelhy, who took first at 160 and Steve Buffington, who was the champion at 285.

Also placing for the Bulldogs were Alex Reffett (runner-up at 171), Daniel Cole (third at 135), Corey Newman (third at 140), Michael Hagen (fourth at 152) and Alex Daube (fifth at 145).

Grayson wins one of three

LOGANVILLE - The Rams wrestled three dual meets Saturday, dropping decisions of 65-3 to Class AAAAA dual state champion Collins Hill and 42-28 to Walton, but rebounding to beat Warner Robins 62-15.

Brad Hobby (103), Tucker Kreis (112), Aaron Ballesteros (160), Drew King (171) and Joseph Champaign (215) each won two of their three individual matches on the day for Grayson.

Collins Hill JV wins King of the Hill

SUWANEE - The Eagles were crowned champions in the 29-team field of the Eighth Annual King of the Hill Tournament last weekend.

Four Collins Hill wrestlers earned individual championships, including Bazell Partridge, Caleb Sawchuk, Danny Wheeler and Jaime Hertica.

In addition, five other teams from Gwinnett schools cracked the top 10 in the team standings.

Parkview, led by individuals champion Matt Elakatt, placed third, followed closely by fourth-place Peachtree Ridge - which had individual champions Nick Brownlow and Zach Brownlow.

Wesleyan finished sixth behind individual champions Chris Zalesky and Cole Watson while North Gwinnett was ninth and Grayson took 10th behind individual champions Clayton Hyde.
