WINDER - Barrow County parents can schedule their vacations two years in advance now.
The Barrow County Board of Education approved school calendars for the years 2008-09 and 2009-10 in Tuesday's board meeting.
After starting school three weeks later than usual this past fall, students will return to school Aug. 15. They will pick up their book bags even earlier the following year with an Aug. 3, 2009 start date, which is about the time Barrow County schools usually open.
The first day of school was delayed in 2007 and 2008 due to on-going school construction and upgrades.
School will end June 5, 2009 and May 21, 2010. Students will have 27 days off during the 2008-09 school year and 26 during the 2009-10 year.
In other business:
· The board voted to add an additional social studies elective class for 11th- and 12th-graders at Winder-Barrow High School.
"Humanities" was designed by Dan Lundy, a WBHS social studies teacher. Students will study man's ability to understand the world, express that understanding and evaluate that perception from an historical perspective, according to a statement from Principal Rob Johnson.
"By the end of the semester the students will meet the American Library Association's information literacy standards," Johnson said.
· Winder-Barrow High School was named Clean School of the Month for February.
