Hebron coach resigns

Rick Burlingame stepped down as the head football coach at Hebron Christian, but will remain as athletic director for the Class A private school in Dacula.

Burlingame started the football team from scratch and was at the helm last year for the program's first varsity season. The Lions had their ups and downs, but made strides playing a non-region schedule in 2008.

It was the time demands of a developing football program that had Burlingame turning over the reins. He let his team know at the season-ending awards banquet.

"I just tried to explain to everyone that God was leading me to step down," Burlingame said. "It was like two full-time jobs."

With the football program growing, Burlingame said he wasn't going to be able to devote the proper amount of time to that and his duties as AD.

"It was time to give up the football," said Burlingame, who returned from a coaching hiatus of 17 years to start the Lions' program three years ago. "I'll keep my hand in all the sports. I'm real excited about moving forward.

"We're looking forward to building the stadium. The football program, the whole athletic program, is headed in the right direction."

The team ended on a positive note this fall and will play one more season of non region competition before taking the next step.

"I was real pleased with the team," Burlingame said. "We made a lot of progress. We still have a ways to go. But that last game, the way we came back, it was a great way for seniors to go out and, for the kids coming back, it was a step in right direction.

"We did lose, but we were down by several touchdowns and had a chance to win the ballgame. One of the keys for next year is for kids to get in the weight room."

Burlingame is now in the process of looking for his replacement.

"We're going to keep our options open," he said. "Of course, we're looking for a Christian. Hopefully he's experienced, really knows the game and he'll have to have some enthusiasm. And he has to really want to build a program."

Anyone interested in applying for the job can e-mail their resume to Burlingame at at burlingamer@hebronlions.org or send it to the school at 570 Dacula Road, Dacula, Ga., 30019.
