LAWRENCEVILLE - Joy Fowler's favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night," and it was also the inspiration for her holiday album, "Joy."
Each Christmas, the Suwanee resident performs with her husband's choir - Chris Fowler is the fine arts coordinator for Buford City Schools - and the final song of that concert is always "O Holy Night," in which Fowler is featured as a soloist.
"People have asked many times over the years if we had that on a recording, so that was kind of the catalyst," Fowler said, "that was the idea to record that song as well as a full album of Christmas favorites."
"Joy," which is Fowler's second album, is a collection of holiday favorites such as "Angels We Have Heard on High," "Joy to the World" and "Silent Night," as well as two original songs. The upbeat original "I Do Believe" was written by Ken Passmore, and "Our Children's Eyes" was penned by the album's producer, Erik Grant Bennett, co-owner of Pulse Performing Arts Center in Suwanee, who joins Fowler for the duet.
"Joy" includes the wistful "I'll be Home for Christmas," Fowler said, for those who can't be with their loved ones at Christmas, especially troops away from home this time of year.
"One of the coolest parts for me on this album is I got to record a duet with my then 5-year-old daughter," Fowler said. Hope Fowler is featured on "Away in a Manger."
"O Holy Night" was recorded with a live choir, including voices from the Buford High School Chamber Chorus, the Buford First Baptist Church choir and Peachtree Corners Baptist Church's choir.
"We were thrilled to be able to record the piece in the sanctuary of the historic Buford First United Methodist Church with its fabulous acoustics," Fowler said. "It was a special memory for those of us who participated, and I hope listeners will be able to sense the magic of that moment in the recording."
