LAWRENCEVILLE - Police arrested an Atlanta man just after 6 p.m. Thursday after he fought with a Gwinnett police officer and broke into a home in the Jefferson Station subdivision off of Sever Road.
An officer was interviewing Ahmaad Shamari Jarvis on Sever Road at about 12:45 p.m. because he fit the description of a suspect in a recent area robbery, said police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli. Jarvis "became aggressive" and attacked the officer, Schiralli said, and the two fought briefly. Schiralli said the officer had been punched but was not seriously injured. "The suspect disengaged and the officer saw a (gun) clip fall from his person," Schiralli said. "(The suspect) picked the clip up and ran into the subdivision." Backup was already on its way and police immediately set up a perimeter. While searching the neighborhood, an officer heard glass break behind a house on Summer Hollow Trail and saw that a back window had been broken out. Officers secured the house and the Gwinnett County Police SWAT team and a negotiator responded to the scene. Authorities eventually made contact with the homeowners, who told them no one was at home. The SWAT team entered the home, where they eventually found Jarvis hiding in an upstairs room. He was arrested without further incident and was taken to the Gwinnett County Jail. He is being charged with aggravated assault and burglary, Schiralli said. Records show Jarvis has previous arrests in Gwinnett for possession of a controlled substance or marijuana and driving with an expired tag and no insurance.More like this story
