LAWRENCEVILLE - Santa Claus, his reindeer and the sleigh the eight of them drive won't have to worry about construction-related lane closures slowing them down next week while delivering presents.
That's because the Georgia Department of Transportation, in a little gift-giving move of its own, decided that there wouldn't be any to think about. "To provide you with a holiday period free of construction work and lane closures there will be no construction lane closures on interstates or major state routes from 12 p.m., Tuesday Dec, 23, until 5 a.m., Monday, Dec. 29," said department spokesman Russell McMurry in a statement. "We hope you have a safe and happy Christmas with your family." Georgia DOT is now including mandatory no work days on holidays and peak travel days around holidays in its construction contracts, McMurry said. He added that motorists should still be aware that emergency repairs or incident response could require temporary lane closures. Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511, a free phone service, for updated information about construction projects on interstates and state routes.More like this story
