Selected home-video releases available this week:
'Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!'
The beloved children's tale became an animated hit featuring the voice of Jim Carrey in the title role, an elephant desperate to convince his jungle denizens about the existence of an endangered microscopic community of people called Who's, with Steve Carell sounding off as the mayor of Who-ville. Two-disc DVD and Blu-ray releases have deleted scenes and test footage with commentary from the filmmakers, cast and crew interviews, a segment on Carrey and featurettes on how the animators brought Seuss' storybook world to life. They also come with a digital copy of the film. The movie is available separately as a bare-bones single DVD with both widescreen and full-screen versions. Single-disc DVD, $29.98; two-disc DVD set, $34.98; two-disc Blu-ray set, $39.98. (20th Century Fox)
'I Am Legend'
Will Smith's apocalyptic sci-fi smash gets a classy boxed-set makeover with a three-disc DVD and two-disc Blu-ray 'Ultimate Collector's Edition,' including two versions of the movie, the theatrical release and a cut with an alternate ending. Previously filmed as Vincent Price's 'The Last Man on Earth' and Charlton Heston's 'The Omega Man,' the story features Smith as a scientist seeking a cure for the global plague that killed most of humanity and turned the rest into ravenous mutants. The oversized sets include animated comics centered on other plague survivors, a dozen deleted scenes, and a huge range of behind-the-scenes segments, plus a 44-page book. The sets also have filmmaker commentary and a digital copy of the movie. DVD set, $49.92; Blu-ray set, $59.99. (Warner Bros.)
