Brad Schell became the first Gwinnett Gladiator to repeat as ECHL Player of the Week when the league announced the honor Tuesday.
Schell had four goals and seven points to help the Gladiators go 3-0-1 from Dec. 1-7. Gwinnett is also 7-2-1 in its last 10 games to move into third place in the South Division. Somewhat quietly, Schell has been returning to the form that won him ECHL MVP honors in 2005-06. The Saskatchewan native scored two power-play goals in a 9-2 road victory over Mississippi on Saturday, helping the team set a new franchise record for goals in a game. Schell had a goal and two assists in a 4-3 shootout loss the previous night, also against Mississippi. He also had a goal and an assist for the Gladiators in a 3-2 win over South Carolina last Tuesday. Selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the sixth round of the 2002 NHL draft, the 24-year-old is tied for the team lead with nine goals and is tied for second with 11 assists. He has 20 points in 20 games. Schell was also named Player of the Week for Jan. 23-29, 2006. He won Player of the Month for January 2007. On behalf of Schell, a case of pucks will be donated to a Gwinnett area youth hockey organization by In Glas Co, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Coincidentally, former Gladiator Craig Kowalski was named the league's goaltender of the week on Tuesday. Gwinnett's own Josh Johnson was runner-up for the award. The Gladiators play at 8:05 p.m. today in Mississippi and return home for a Friday matchup with the Sea Wolves at 7:35 p.m.More like this story
