Matchups set for '09 Corky Kell Classic

DULUTH - Between visits from college coaches at Monday's Touchdown Club of Gwinnett, Grayson head football coach Mickey Conn got a short visit from Dave Hunter.

Hunter, director of the Corky Kell Classic, informed Conn that his 2009 opponent in the annual showcase at the Georgia Dome would be Camden County. Conn's Rams nearly made it into this Saturday's Class AAAAA state championship game against Camden, but lost a double-overtime heartbreaker last weekend to Peachtree Ridge.

"I had no idea (who we were playing) until he told me just now," said Conn, whose team played Camden County in last year's quarterfinals. "I wish I was playing them this week instead. But that's good. We know it will be a tremendous challenge, but it's good for us to see that kind of speed. And it's good to see it that early."

Grayson will play Camden at 5:30 p.m. in next year's games, slated for Aug. 22, in the Dome.

The other Gwinnett matchups pit annual participants Brookwood and McEachern against each other at 2:30 p.m. The nightcap will feature Norcross against Walton. The only non-Gwinnett game is Starr's Mill vs. Etowah at 11:45 a.m.

Grayson and Norcross made their Corky Kell debuts back in August. Brookwood has played in every one of the early-season events, dating back to 1992.

"This will be the second year of a two-year cycle, so we'll probably make some changes (to the field) after this year," Hunter said.
