Kaul wins by one vote in Norcross
Hixson defeats McKinney for council seat

NORCROSS - One vote decided a Norcross council runoff Tuesday, with Ross Kaul edging Shelley Crofton 399 to 398 in the unofficial results.

In a second runoff, political newcomer Andrew Hixson defeated Jan McKinney 427 to 366.

City spokeswoman Pamela Wilson said the original vote totals came to a tie in the Kaul-Crofton race, but the city attorney was called to City Hall to determine one unreadable ballot.

According to the city's Web site eight ballots were spoiled in the race, which was to replace outgoing Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Allen.

Neither Kaul nor Crofton returned phone calls Tuesday night.

In the race to replace Keith Shewbert, who left the council for an unsuccessful House race, Hixson said he was pleased with the turnout, which was nearly as high as the general election in November.

"My biggest objective for running is keeping our positive momentum forward, especially in these hard times," Hixson said. "I'm really excited."

McKinney offered her thanks to supporters and declined further comment.
