Crash victim ID'd; husband still critical

LAWRENCEVILLE - On Monday, police identified the woman killed in a head-on crash the day after Thanksgiving as 55-year-old Donna Hammett of Winder.

Her husband who was driving, James Hammett, 53, remains in critical condition at Gwinnett Medical Center, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 10 a.m. at Oakland Road near Oakland Ridge Drive, where firefighters found the Hammett's 1993 Buick Century overturned after it collided with a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 16-year-old juvenile.

The juvenile, who police did not identify, was at fault, said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. David Schiralli.

Investigators believe the juvenile driver crossed the center line while driving southbound "for unknown reasons," causing the crash, Schiralli said.

Schiralli said the juvenile was treated for minor injuries. Charges are pending, he said.
