Shiloh 21, Duluth 6

DULUTH - With the start of a new season came high expectations for the Shiloh Generals and they were met with a dominant first half effort in its 21-6 win over Duluth on Friday night.

Shiloh head coach Keith Wilkes was pleased with his team's effort.

"Overall, I am satisfied but we still made too many mistakes, the defense played well the whole game," Wilkes said.

The mistakes Wilkes referred to were five illegal procedure penalties that set the Generals back in the first half.

The Generals broke a scoreless tie in the final minute of the opening period when quarterback Mark Wright found running back Eugene Glenn on a 45-yard pass that gave Shiloh 7-0 lead.

Duluth was unable to move the ball much as it struggled on the ground early.

After showing some offensive continuity, the Wildcats' drive ended when a fumble by tight end Hamilton Garner gave the ball to Shiloh at its own 20. Garner redeemed himself by blocking a Shiloh punt on the ensuing possession but the Generals were able to advance the ball and convert it for a first down because the ball was behind the line of scrimmage when Shiloh recovered it.

Shiloh took full advantage and converted the broken play into points later in the possession when Glenn, who had 128 rushing yards on 11 carries, ran and spun through tacklers to score on a 30-yard run, giving his team a 14-0 lead heading into the half.

Neither team scored in a quick third quarter, both unable to sustain any offensive drives. However Shiloh put the game away when running back Samuel Muse, who ran for 78 yards on 15 carries, scored from four yards out to give Shiloh a 21-0 lead.

"We are just trying to gain confidence; it's all about gaining confidence with our team, we've just got to keep gaining momentum each week," Wilkes said.

Shiloh's defense stymied Duluth, not allowing the Wildcats to run a play in Shiloh territory until quarterback Alex Fragoso connected with running back Matt Gagich on a 42-yard reception with 4:20 left in the game. Shiloh will take on Mt. Zion next weekend, while Duluth will battle Meadowcreek.
