Day care evacuated after gas line ruptured

LAWRENCEVILLE - A gas line break forced children and staff at one Lawrenceville day care to have lunch with their neighbors Friday morning.

Following evacuation protocol, about 120 kids and staffers at Lawrenceville Academy were shuffled next door to Simonton Middle School after construction workers struck a gas line near the schools, an official said.

The break happened about 10:30 a.m. at New Hope and Simonton roads, on a property adjacent to the day care. A Citgo gas station, Domino's Pizza and a dry cleaning business were also evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The evacuation "was done strictly as a precaution," said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge.

Rutledge said all involved parties were allowed to return when the leak was brought under control just after noon.
