Owners: What started as a weekend barbecue venture in a portable trailer across from Central Gwinnett High School in 1999 has become a full-time job for business partners Martha Kelly, a former Gwinnett County teacher, and George Richbourg, who worked for Kubota Tractor Co. for 18 years before going into the restaurant business.

"I had no intention of being in the barbecue business," admitted Kelly, whose late husband was a partner in the initial barbecue venture. When a business obligation took him away the weekend the trailer was set to open, Kelly stepped up to run the venture with Richbourg.

"We did it and started it from the ground level, and we've been working together ever since," Richbourg said.

Atmosphere: Hometown Barbeque is a place where you might want to sit and stay awhile. The building looks like a home and the interior is filled with wooden, homey kitchen-style tables. A back dining area can be reserved for large parties and events, and front porch seating is perfect for a cool, sunny day. A pavilion is set up behind the building for outdoor events.

Menu: All meats served at Hometown Barbeque are cooked on site with hickory wood, Kelly said.

"We don't pull anything out of a can, we make everything from scratch," she added.

That includes the barbecue restaurant staples - pulled pork, chicken, ribs and Brunswick stew.

During the winters, a beef vegetable soup is served, and Richbourg said he and Kelly try to add something new to the menu about every six months - Richbourg said the Southern style potato salad is the latest addition.

Beverages include sodas, lemonade and sweet and unsweet tea.

Things you might not know: Hometown Barbeque is celebrating four years of business at its current location this Labor Day.
