HOSCHTON - Hoschton's half way to its goal of breaking a Guinness World Record for most scarecrows in one location.
About 2,100 scarecrows have been completed or are in production, Mayor Bill Copenhaver said. The city needs about 1,900 straw men to meet its goal of 4,000.
Some scarecrows have already been placed along the roadways, and organizers hope to have them all up by Sept. 1 throughout Hoschton's ZIP code.
Robbie Bettis, a lifelong Hoschton resident, developed the idea to break the record held by the Cincinnati Horticultural Society, which had 3,311 scarecrows in one location.
Bettis, who also helps organize the city's annual Fall Festival, said previously she hopes to announce the results at the event, which takes place Sept. 26 to 27.
Copenhaver said the effort has been a fun community event.
"I think everyone is having fun doing it and enjoying it," he said.
Those interested in building a scarecrow should fill out a registration form, available online at www.hoschtonfallfestival.com.
