DOUGLAS Rev. Dr. J. Douglas Gibson, age 97, of Lawrenceville, GA, died Thursday, August 14, 2008. He was born July 22, 1911 in Brooks, Georgia to William Andrew Gibson and Missouri Elizabeth Hambrick Gibson. He was preceded in death by his former wife of 42 years, Rachael Moss Gibson, his parents, one brother, and three sisters. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Daisy Leaphart Garrett Gibson, sister Virginia Eason, Raleigh, NC, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Moss Bailey, Pawleys Island SC, step-daughter and husband Peggy and Jeff Coffey, Lawrenceville, Georgia, three step-granddaughters and husbands, Heather & Mike Gay, Statham, Georgia, Jennifer & Toby Feagin, Lilburn, Georgia; Donna & Mark Schneider, Dacula, Georgia, four step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He graduated from Reinhardt Academy High School and Jr. College, graduated from Emory University and Seminary, and graduated from Burton Seminary. He was licensed to preach in 1929, was ordained Deacon in 1934 and joined North Georgia Methodist Conference in 1936. Rev. Gibson served as Pastor of South Bend, Forsyth Circuit, Fayetteville First, Royston First, South Bend in Rome, Tallapoosa First, Eatonton First, Conyers First, Cedartown First, and Lawrenceville First for a total of 35 years. He served Mt. Zion in Duluth for four years after retiring. He gave up the Pastorate in 1971 and was appointed to the Lawrenceville Pastoral Counseling Service for 19 years. He began the use of Hypnotherapy with alcoholics in 1956. The demands finally became so great that he had to choose between the Pastorate and Counseling. The Associated Press published an article in 1957 about his using Hypnosis in counseling. He had letters from Sydney, Australia, South Korea and 42 states approving his use of hypnosis. He was selected three times as the District Church and Pastor of the year. He served as District Director of Youth Work in the Griffin, and Athens-Elberton Districts. He founded that District Youth Camp while at Royston and it continued to operate for about 30 years. He worked with the Youth at Camp Glisson, and The South Eastern Jurisdictional Youth Assembly at Lake Junaluska. He served as an Assistant Secretary of the Annual Conference for four years. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of North Georgia Conference Board of Evangelism for 8 years. He was active in civic activities, was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Exchange Club, Masonic Lodge and was elected President of the Lions Club at Tallapoosa and Lawrenceville. He served as volunteer Co-Chaplain for the prisoners who built Rock Eagle 4H Camp. He served on the Northeast and Northwest Georgia Boy Scout Council for many years. He served as Chairman of Gwinnett County American Heart Fund Drive for 5 years and as County Chairman of the American Cancer Fund Drive for 3 years. He wrote a column “Life As I See It” for the Gwinnett Home Weekly for 11 years. He was elected a Trustee of Reinhardt College in 1945 and is still a member of the Board. The trustees and members of the Ministerial Association honored him with a Reinhardt Scholarship for 50 years of service on the board. The Ministerial Association honored him in 2002 with the John Wesley Award. He served as Chaplain on some Cruise Ships and as Lecturer on “Life Enrichment” for about ten cruises. He is listed on “Two Thousand Men of Achievement” and in “International Who's Who in Community Service”. He was active in Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church and has been since he came as Pastor in 1964, and never misses a chance to praise the JOY Sunday School Class. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 17, 2008 at 3:00 PM at the Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church with the interment to follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park. The JOY Sunday School Class and all Ministers will serve as honorary escort. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1-3 & 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
