Gas station clerk booked in gambling sting

NORCROSS - Undercover officers arrested a Norcross gas station clerk this week for running a covert gambling operation at work, police said.

Police arrested Ravikumar Vadicherla, 28, of Duluth, on a felony charge of commercial gambling Wednesday.

The suspect works at a Shell gas station at 4900 S. Old Peachtree Road, near the intersection of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

The investigation began June 27 when a vice unit started probing illegal activity in the area, according to a police report.

"Apparently, the defendant paid out cash to undercover officers from the store's electronic gambling machines," said Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Illana Spellman. "Evidence was collected and (Vadicherla) was charged."

Vadicherla posted $5,700 bond and was released from the Gwinnett County Jail the day of his arrest.

Spellman said the gambling machines on site at the station are probably legal, "since there are not any additional charges," she said.

An employee at the business said a manager was unavailable for comment Friday.

State law forbids gambling in any form except licensed bingo, raffles, the Georgia Lottery and electronic games of skill, such as Blackjack.
