A man and a woman stranded after their kayak capsized from strong currents on the Chattahoochee River were rescued by firefighters Thursday, authorities said.
The duo, who are reportedly experienced kayakers, were found on a tree stump on the river about a half-mile south of the Ga. Highway 20 bridge between Buford and Suwanee, Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Capt. Thomas Rutledge said. The two reportedly met with strong currents as water was being generated from Buford Dam.
Firefighters from Gwinnett County and Forsyth County worked quickly to locate and remove the victims. A Forsyth firefighter on a personal watercraft reached the kayakers at about 4:01 p.m. and were removed from the waters by a rescue boat from the Gwinnett Fire Department at 4:22 p.m.
The man was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries. The woman was not hurt.
