Volunteers work overtime at Emory Eastside

SNELLVILLE - In honor of volunteer week, Emory Eastside Medical Center recently reported its volunteers have provided 62,193 hours of service in the past year.

Volunteers assisted with several hospital functions, including working at information locations and in visitor waiting rooms, operating the coffee carts, staffing the gift shop, sending bereavement cards and birthday cards, doing blood pressures for visitors and for health screenings, maintaining the Heritage Center garden, visiting nursing homes and performing musical or dance arrangements, providing tours, sewing baby caps and infant clothing and mailing more than 42,000 pieces of mail.

Medical center offers screenings

SNELLVILLE - Emory Eastside Medical Center will offer on-site health screenings from 8 to 10 a.m. May 15.

Screenings include fasting blood sugar ($3.80), cholesterol ($5) and total lipid profile - cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL, and cardiac risk factors - ($17.80). Participants must fast from 8 p.m. the evening before with no more than a sip of water to take any required medication. Free blood pressure checks and free stroke assessments and information are also available. No appointment is necessary, but attendees will need to bring their physician's name and address. Social Security numbers must be provided for identification purposes.

Organization raises funds to fight syndrome

BUFORD - John's Foundation of Cushing's Awareness, a Sugar Hill-based organization, recently raised more than $1,000 in the fight against Cushing's Syndrome, a condition that causes pediatric obesity.

For more than seven hours at Sonz in Buford, 50 participants each braved a nonstop, 15-minute workout to raise money. John Seller, a 9-year-old who suffers from the syndrome, was presented a proclamation by the Georgia Department of Health on behalf of Gov. Sonny Perdue naming April 8 "Cushing's Awareness Day" in Georgia.
