LAWRENCEVILLE - An off-duty DeKalb County police officer is in serious condition after a collision early Monday on Interstate 85 in which his disabled vehicle was struck by a tour bus, police said.
Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Illana Spellman said the officer was traveling northbound on Interstate 85, near Jimmy Carter Boulevard, when his dark-colored pickup truck hydroplaned and struck the median wall. Moments later, the vehicle was struck from behind by a tour bus, she said. The incident occurred about 1 a.m. Monday. The officer, who has not been identified, is in serious condition at Gwinnett Medical Center. The driver of the tour bus was not injured. No passengers were on the bus. Police did not release the tour bus company's name. The officer's truck was in an angled position, investigators said, and its taillights may not have been visible to the driver of the bus. The roads were slick due to early morning rain showers. It is unknown if the driver of the tour bus will face charges, Spellman said.More like this story
