20 years of service
Norcross co-op to celebrate anniversary with open house

NORCROSS - In the beginning, there were only a handful of people in need.

And a handful of volunteers came together to help them, creating the Norcross Cooperative Ministry 20 years ago, Director Shirley Cabe said.

But not only have the needs in the west Gwinnett community grown over the past two decades, so has the spirit of the movement, blossoming to 21 churches, hundreds of volunteers and help from businesses, civic organizations and individual contributors meeting the needs of thousands each year.

"It's hard to believe it's been 20 years since the Norcross Cooperative Ministry first opened its doors at the little house next to Norcross First Baptist Church," Cabe said in a press release. "A simple idea that a few pasters had - to pool their resources to serve the needy of the area. Oh, how that need and (the ministry's) response has grown. And God works in the lives of those who serve Him and the clients we serve."

To celebrate the 20th anniversary, the ministry is planning an open house from 3 to 5 p.m. May 4 at the 2275 Mitchell Road location.

Cabe wants to open the doors to the community to celebrate the ministry's milestone, but if people feel lead to bring a gift, she suggests using the number 20 to make it extra special - 20 cans of food, 20 clothing items or even $20 would go a long way in the lives of those in need, she said.

During the event, staff and volunteers will conduct tours and explain how people can get involved in the ministry.
