Prep roundup: Dacula makes history with 2nd-round berth

DACULA - It was a history making win for Dacula as the Falcons knocked off Lakeside-DeKalb 3-1 on Wednesday in the first round of the Clas AAAA state t girls tennis tournament.

The win puts Dacula in the second round for the first time ever. The Falcons (20-4) will play Hillgrove next week. Marielle Herrera won the No. 1 singles match, while Caitlin Hosford did the same at No. 2. Holly Knight and Stephanie Weeden earned a point at No. 2 doubles. Maggie Bevil was up in the No. 3 singles match before Dacula clinched.


Mill Creek 3, Kennesaw Mt. 2

HOSCHTON - The Region 7-AAAAA champs got a scare from a four-seed, but Mill Creek advanced to the second round of the Class AAAAA state tournament with a 3-2 win over Kennesaw Mountain on Wednesday.

The Hawks (21-1) picked up wins from its No. 1 doubles team of Kristy Yau and Nela Handac and its No. 2 duo of Anna Clayton and Jessica Gerster. Michelle Yau won her match at No. 3 singles.

Mill Creek will play Northview in the second round next week.

Brookwood 4, Centennial 0

LAWRENCEVILLE - Brookwood is still unbeaten after shutting out Centennial 4-0 in the first round of the Class AAAAA state tournament on Wednesday at Rhodes Jordan Park.

Courtney McLane won the No. 1 singles match for the Broncos (21-0). Dana Guentert won at No. 2 singles, while Lindsey Peyton had the lead in the No. 3 singles match. The No. 1 doubles team of Hailey Denson and Nicole Hernandez earned a win as did the No. 2 pair of Katie Williams and Jordan Johnston.

Brookwood awaits the winner of the Harrison/North Gwinnett match in the second round next week.

Providence 3, Georgia Military Prep 0

NORCROSS - Providence will take its unbeaten record into the second round of the Class A state tournament after knocking off Georgia Military Prep 3-0 on Wednesday at the Hudlow Tennis Center.

Heather Heusel gave the Stars (21-0) a win at No. 1 singles, while Amanda Jackson took care of No. 2. The No. 2 doubles team of Meghan Milks and Emma Auman also won.

No. 3 singles player Emma Crist was winning her match, as was the No. 1 doubles pair of Rachel Swindell and Julie Ferris. Providence takes on either Jefferson or Trion next week.


Wesleyan 3, North Oconee 1

BOGART - Wesleyan advanced to the second round of the Class AA state playoffs after beating North Oconee 3-1 on Wednesday. The Wolves swept the doubles matches with wins from the No. 1 team of Erik Trum and David Rodriguez and the No. 2 pair of Colin Sylvester and Tyler Hediger. Norman Chang also won at No. 1 singles.

The Wolves play either Heard County or Calhoun in the second round next week.

Providence 3, Lincoln Co. 0

NORCROSS - Providence knocked off Lincoln County 3-0 in the first round of the Class A state tournament on Wednesday.

Elias Crist and Brendan Fitzpatrick won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Drew Meyers and Blake Norman handled the No. 2 doubles match for the Stars. The No. 1 team of Carter Rice and Nick Bougas had the lead when the match was called.

Providence advances to take on Athens Academy in the second round next week.


Norcross 5, Peachtree Ridge 4

NORCROSS - Forrest Garrett was dominating on the mound, leading Norcross to a 5-4 win over Peachtree Ridge on Wednesday.

The Blue Devil hurler allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out nine. Garrett improved his record to 5-2. Nathan Mitzel got his second save for the Blue Devils (15-7, 9-3).

Matt Kinney drove in two runs with two hits. Beau Buckler also drove in two. Mitzel went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Shiloh 9, Berkmar 5

LILBURN - Eddie Mathis stole three bases as Shiloh beat Berkmar 9-5 on Wednesday.

Mathis went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Generals (5-17, 2-7). Josh Carr went 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Vince Wood (2-for-4) also drove in two runs. Jason Smith pitched six solid innings to get the win. He struck out seven and allowed two earned runs.

Jarrett Rivera hit a two-run homer to lead the Patriots (5-17, 1-8). He and Adam Webster both had two hits.

GAC 6, Buford 3

BUFORD - Andrew Steckenrider struck out 12 in 62/3 innings to lead Greater Atlanta Christian over Buford 6-3 on Wednesday.

Steckenrider (8-0) allowed three runs, none of them earned, to get the win. Brent Burrows struck out the last batter to get his first save for the Spartans (15-4, 10-2). Patrick Savage went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Ian Graham went 2-for-4 and added two RBIs.

Mill Creek 13, North Forsyth 4

HOSCHTON - Johnny Knight hit two homers and drove in seven runs as Mill Creek beat North Forsyth 13-4 on Wednesday.

Knight hit a three-run blast and a grand slam for his fourth and fifth homers of the year. He went 2-for-4. Noah Hanley went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Hawks (16-6, 11-2). Matt Tunnel (2-for-2) scored three times and drove in one. Zach Hogan (2-for-3) finished with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Brian Holmes (5-1) was credited with the win. He struck out four in an 12/3 of scoreless-relief. Brandon Bast started, allowing three runs on seven hits. He pitched 41/3 and didn't qualify for the win. Tyler Akins struck out two in a perfect seventh inning.

Meadowcreek 10, Clarkston 4

NORCROSS - Tony Duarte ripped a three-run homer as Meadowcreek beat Clarkston 10-4 on Wednesday.

Duarte finished with four RBIs for the Mustangs (3-12). Tri Nguyen added two runs and two hits. Josh Lee pitched a complete game to get the win. He allowed three earned runs and five hits, while striking out eight.

Duluth 12, Forsyth Central 1

CUMMING - Luke Jordan allowed no earned runs in a complete game as Duluth beat Forsyth Central 12-1 in five innings Wednesday.

Jordan (1-4) allowed five hits in the win. He also had two hits of his own at the plate for the Wildcats (4-18, 2-12). Josh McKinney (2-for-2) drove in four, two of them on a homer. Reid Merwin was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Jacob Jordan went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kyle Wilson added two RBIs.

Dacula 4, Eastside 0

DACULA - Zach Breaux pitched a one-hit shutout as Dacula beat Eastside 4-0 on Wednesday.

Breaux (3-4) struck out nine to get the win. Taylor Smith (2-for-3) hit a home run and drove in three to lead the Falcons (10-14, 9-13). Frankie Miller and Chris Owens each went 2-for-3. Owens drove in a run. Jeremy Kien and Billy Judd each had a hit.
