Prep Roundup: Johnson, Buford claim region girls golf titles

MARIETTA - Abby Johnson claimed low individual honors, leading the Buford girls golf team to the Region 6-AA championship on Tuesday at the Marietta City Club.

Johnson shot 75 for a five-stroke victory over runner-up Lindsay Adams of GAC.

Buford's total of 167 edged Wesleyan's 171, although both teams qualify for the May 5 state tournament at Gold Creek in Dawsonville. Defending state champion GAC shot 174 for third place, failing to qualify for the state tourney. Five of the eight teams in the tough region shot under 192.

Buford also got a 92 from Christie Wilson.

Wesleyan was led by third-place finisher Taylor Blair, who shot 83, and fourth-place finisher Brooke Atkinson, who shot 88.


Dacula finishes second

HELEN - Dacula finished second in Region 8-AAAA with a score of 199 on Monday.

Brittany Kemp led with a low of 95 and Brittany Griffin shot a 104 for Dacula. The Falcons advance to the state championships on May 5.


Carrollton 5, Apalachee 0

CARROLLTON - Apalachee lost 5-0 to Carrollton in the state tournament on Tuesday.

Apalachee set a school record for wins as it finished its season 14-7 and it was the second straight year the Wildcats were in the state tournament.

The seniors who played on Tuesday were: Who Hang (12-8 record), Daniel Wright (5-14), Richard Neeman (15-4), Daniel McConnell (13-5), Pace Easterling (10-4) and Brian Pozowicz (11-3).

Peachtree Ridge 2, North Cobb 0

SUWANEE - Peachtree Ridge took a 3-0 victory over North Cobb and advanced to the next round of the state playoffs on Tuesday.

Tyler Droll and Dylan Higgins won at singles and Steven Menhorn and Sam Ridderhof won at No. 2 doubles for Peachtree Ridge (19-2).


GAC 8, Central Gwinnett 3

NORCROSS - Patrick Savage was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs as GAC took an 8-3 win over Central Gwinnett on Tuesday.

Michael Hoeft went 2-for-4 with a double and Andrew Steckenrider was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Brent Burrows (3-1) got the win for the Spartans (14-4).

Providence 21, OLM 1

FAIRBURN - Addison McDowell threw three innings and gave up three hits, a run and struck out two batters as Providence took a 21-1 win over Our Lady of Mercy on Tuesday.

Casey Gray was 3-for-4 with three runs and Tommy Bonner was 2-for-3 with two runs. Chris Wages was 2-for-2 and had two stolen bases and four RBIs and Jesse Meier finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs for Providence (17-4-1).

Hebron 14, Tallulah Falls 3

DACULA - Trent Johnson pitched four innings and struck out five batters, but gave up five hits and a run as Hebron took a 14-3 victory over Tallulah Falls on Tuesday.

David Brannen was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, while Mike Wilkerson and Bobby Cole each were 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for Hebron (12-7).


Wesleyan 23, GAC 2

NORCROSS - Wesleyan defeated Greater Atlanta Christian 23-2 on Tuesday.

Christi Hillegass led Wesleyan with five goals and Kennington Groff contributed four goals for Wesleyan. Grace Cowart and Kelsey Sanders each had three goals and Lindsey Bever had two goals for Wesleyan (5-10).

Rachael Roughgarden and Caroline Freeman each scored a goal and Lauren Sgro had an assist for GAC (3-4).


Blessed Trinity 3, GAC 2

ROSWELL - Jeffrey Johnson scored two goals for Greater Atlanta Christian (8-9), but the Spartans couldn't hold on and fell to Blessed Trinity 3-2 on Tuesday.


Preg wins two titles, Providence places sixth

FAIRBURN - Allison Preg won the 1,600 and 3,200 races and the Providence girls finished sixth in the Region 5-A championship.

Preg's region titles qualify her for the state meet next meet in Albany. Kendal White also qualified for state by finishing second in the high jump.

Candi Gaul finished third in the pole vault and Natalie Calhoun was fifth. Gaul also finished fifth in the 100.
