Child ejected in morning crash

LAWRENCEVILLE - A 4-year-old passenger ejected from a vehicle during a morning crash in Lawrenceville was airlifted to an Atlanta hospital Tuesday.

The child, who is expected to survive, was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with serious injuries, said police. The child was ejected during a two-car crash at the intersection of Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and Ga. Highway 120 about 9 a.m.

The child was not properly restrained in the backseat of a 2005 Nissan Altima, Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman said.

The driver of the Nissan attempted to turn left onto Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road and struck a northbound 2003 Honda Accord on Ga. 120. The driver of the Honda was treated at Gwinnett Medical Center for a minor injury, Spellman said.

Spellman said the driver of the Nissan could face citations for improperly restraining the 4-year-old child and failure to yield while turning left.

"Child seatbelt laws apply no matter the child's age," Spellman said.

A second child was secured in the Nissan's backseat at the time and escaped serious injury. The investigation is ongoing, Spellman said.
