Prep roundup: Providence girls win fourth straight area soccer title

LILBURN - Erin O'Rourke clinched the Area 6-AA/A title for Providence when she banked in her team's last penalty kick as the Stars beat Greater Atlanta Christian 2-1 on Tuesday.

The area title was the fourth in a row for Providence, who will open up the Class AA/A state playoffs at home next Friday.

"It was just crazy," Providence head coach Jonny Williamson said. "Whoever won that game won the area and whoever lost didn't even make the playoffs. It was a hard fought, physical battle with no cheap shots."

GAC had a 2-0 lead into the second half when the Stars started to battle back. Emily Bougas scored the first goal for Providence on a penalty kick and Tori Lopez provided the equalizer a few minutes later.

After a scoreless overtime, it came down to penalty kicks and O'Rourke delivered when the ball hit the left post, caromed across the goal and bounced in off the right post.

Taylor Sorrells, who was playing hurt, had a good game at keeper for the Stars, including two saves during the penalty kicks.


Brookwood 5, Houston Co. 0

WARNER ROBINS - Brookwood improved to 13-2 on Tuesday with a 5-0 shutout of Houston County.

Michelle Osborne scored two goals for Brookwood while Erin Tate, Jordan Miller and Kayla Brown each scored one.

Parkview 3, Central 1

LAWRENCEVILLE - Parkview closed out its regular season in perfect fashion on Tuesday with a 3-1 win over Central Gwinnett, improving its record to 17-0 overall and 7-0 in Region 8-AAAAA.

Scoring goals for Parkview were Abby Batchelor, Ginny Leviton and Kristina Pascutti. Megan Geiger had two assists. Kirsten Ross earned the win at keeper with three saves.

Dacula 2, Heritage 1

DACULA - Dacula wrapped up the third seed in Region 8-AAAA on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Heritage, winning with a 3-2 edge in penalty kicks.

Alexis Scott scored for Dacula (12-2) in regulation and added one of the penalty kicks, along with Lexi Vassell and Samantha Harrison.


Brookwood 2, Houston Co. 1

WARNER ROBINS - Robby Ryan had two goals, both off assists by Theo Yang, as Brookwood nipped Houston County 2-1 on Tuesday. Ryan's goals were the first of his high school career.

Brice Eidson, Ben Grassmyer and Scott Phelts all played good defensive games for Brookwood (12-4, 6-1).

Berkmar 3, Meadowcreek 2

LILBURN - Thanks to a 5-3 edge in penalty kicks, Berkmar posted a 3-2 win over Meadowcreek on Tuesday.

Rudy Andino and Ricardo Rubio scored in regulation for Berkmar (5-6-1) while Eric Cambron had the clincher in penalty kicks. Jose Hernandez had six saves in goal for the Patriots.

Parkview 4, Central 0

LAWRENCEVILLE - Jordan Stowe had a goal with two assists on Tuesday as Parkview shut out Central Gwinnett 4-0.

Also scoring goals for Parkview were Michael Peterson, Zach Spicher and Carlos Antunez. Daniel Bullock and Kyle Post shared keeping duties for the shutout.

Habersham Central 3, Dacula 1

MOUNT AIRY - Habersham Central scored three quick goals in the second half to beat Dacula 3-1 on Tuesday and claim the Region 8-AAAA championship.

Dacula (13-4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Franklin Cordon assisted Luis Huertas on the Falcons' lone goal.

GAC 2, Providence 1

LILBURN - Greater Atlanta Christian finished its regular season on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Providence. The match went to penalty kicks with the Spartans (15-1, 8-0) coming away with an 8-7 advantage for the win.

Chris Thomas scored the goal for GAC off an assist from Peter Lobona. Providence later tied it at 1-1 when Taylor Sykes scored off an assist from Jonny Mercado.

GAC will open up the Class AA/A state playoffs at home next Thursday against the North Oconee-Athens Academy loser while Providence (7-8-1) will travel and play the winner.

Wesleyan 2, Whitefield Academy 1

NORCROSS - Greg MacKenzie's assist to Michael Cornelius in overtime proved to be the difference as Wesleyan nipped Whitefield Academy 2-1 on Tuesday in its season finale.

Michael O'Hare scored the first goal for Wesleyan (9-5-1) with an assist from Chris Duvall while sweeper Reed Bennett and keeper Matt Wellborn had good games.


Grayson 11, Duluth 9

DULUTH - Shaun Harrison's two-run double in the top of the 10th was the difference as Grayson outlasted Duluth 11-9 on Tuesday night.

Josh Halford added two hits with a home run and four RBIs for Grayson (9-10) while Dylan Swords was 2-for-6 with a solo homer. Cory Cronan pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the win while Swords pitched the 10th for the save.

Luke Jordan led Duluth (3-16, 1-9) with a 4-for-6 day, including a three-run homer. Reid Merwin was 3-for-6 with two RBIs while Alex Raffensperger had a three-hit day.

Berkmar 10, Parkview 5

LILBURN - Berkmar won its first Region 8-AAAAA game on Tuesday night by beating Parkview 10-5.

Parkview scored four runs in the first off starter Jimmie Drake (2-4), but he settled down and allowed just one more run, going seven innings with six hits and six strikeouts.

Berkmar (5-14, 1-4) scored six runs in the sixth and was led by Jarrett Rivera with two hits and three RBIs. Kareem Hays also had two hits and two RBIs while Jake Hendricks drove in one run with two hits.

Cliff Carter took the loss in relief for Parkview, allowing six runs (two earned) on three hits in 11/3 innings.

Zach Cone led the offense for Parkview (15-5, 4-2) by going 3-for-4 with a solo homer. Michael Frazier went 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Tom Richardson and Matt Foster each had a hit and an RBI.

Buford 18, Pace 3

BUFORD - Pace scored three runs in the first inning but Buford exploded for 17 runs in the bottom of the second as the Wolves pounded Pace 18-3 on Tuesday.

Landon Anderson went 3-for-3 in the second inning with a double, triple, home run and seven RBIs. Cody Getz added two hits with two RBIs while Cameron Crawford drove in two runs on one hit for the Wolves (9-7, 4-4). Jeb Dills pitched two innings for the win, allowing no hits with two strikeouts.

Wesleyan 11, Avondale 0

NORCROSS - Wesleyan belted four home runs on Tuesday as the Wolves upended Avondale 11-0 in five innings in Region 6-AA.

Max Hightower led off the game with a homer and finished with two hits and two RBIs. Kevin Ruiz was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Brent Pugh added a two-run homer, while J.J. Russell ended the game in the fifth with a two-run shot.

Ben Tucker (4-0) picked up the win and the Wolves improved to 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the region.

GAC 12, Lovett 3

ATLANTA - Andrew Steckenrider hit and pitched Greater Atlanta Christian to a 12-3 win over Lovett on Tuesday.

Steckenrider was 2-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate while hurling a complete game, striking out eight with five hits.

Ian Graham added three hits with two RBIs for GAC (10-3, 6-2) while Patrick Savage went 2-for-5.

Providence 10, Mt. Pisgah 0

LILBURN - Jesse Meier (4-2) allowed just one hit in five innings of work with seven strikeouts as Providence topped Mt. Pisgah 10-0 in six innings on Tuesday.

David Frazier went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Chris Wages was 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs. Addison McDowell (2-for-3, two runs), J.D. Pullen (2-for-4, two RBIs) and Jon Walker (2-for-2, two runs, two steals) also had good days at the plate for the Stars (14-4, 9-1).

Killian Hill 6, Bible Baptist 0

LILBRUN - Marshall Dickinson pitched four no-hit innings with five strikeouts as Killian Hill beat Bible Baptist 6-0 on Tuesday.

Jeffery Lanier added three innings of scoreless relief for Killian Hill (12-0, 9-0). Dickinson went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs while Chase Williams added a two-run triple with a run. Aaron Parks and Austin Parks also had two hits each.


Lions reach region finals

NORCROSS - Peachtree Ridge beat both North Forsyth and Norcross on Tuesday to reach the finals of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament.

The Lions will play in the region finals Thursday at Hudlow Tennis Center.

Tyler Droll, Dylan Higgins and the No. 1 doubles team of Justin Licata and Jason Park all won as the Lions beat North Forsyth 3-0.

Licata and Park and the No. 2 doubles pair of Jordan Duke and Steven Menhorn also won, along with Higgins, as the Lions (14-2) beat Norcross 3-0.

Mill Creek 3, Collins Hill 1

NORCROSS - Mill Creek clinched a berth in the Class AAAAA state playoffs with a 3-1 win over Collins Hill in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament on Tuesday.

Mill Creek, which lost in the second round to South Forsyth, will play Norcross on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. for third place.

Mill Creek (12-7) won all three singles matches with victories by Jordan Aremas, Anthony Agee and Christian Gonzales. Collins Hill's point came from a No. 1 doubles win by Acy Estes and Richard Rumble.

Dacula edges Habersham Central

MOUNT AIRY - Dacula slipped past Habersham Central 3-2 on Tuesday.

Winning in doubles play for Dacula (14-4, 11-1) were the pair of Brandon Tucker and Zach Nelson and Ryan Meyer and Justin Rush. Robby Hendley added a win at No. 3 singles.

Apalachee 4, Hart County 1

HARTWELL - For the second straight year, Apalachee clinched a spot in the Class AAA state playoffs as the Wildcats knocked off Hart County 4-1 on Tuesday in the Region 8-AAA playoffs.

Apalachee (13-5) won both doubles matches with wins by the team of Daniel McConnell and Richard Neeman and the pair of Pace Easterling and Brian Pozowicz.

Who Hang added a win at No. 1 singles while Cody Dupre took the No. 3 singles match. Apalachee will play again today at 11:30 a.m. at Oconee County in the region semifinals against Franklin County.


Mill Creek beats Brookwood and Parkview

HOSCHTON - Kevin Lee and Nick Stillwell each carded a 37 on Tuesday as Mill Creek beat both Brookwood and Parkview at Hamilton Mill.

Mill Creek finished with 154 while Brookwood, led by Taylor Rose with 39 and Kevin Seay with 43, was second with 175. Parkview, which was third with 177, received a 37 from Peter Kim and a 41 from Ted Moon.

Shiloh beats South

SNELLVILLE - Stephen Ely and Nick Stovall each shot 49s on Tuesday as Shiloh beat South Gwinnett 200 to 219 at Summit Chase.

South's Matt Clayton shot the low round of the day with a 42.

Buford's Everett shoots 44

BRASELTON - Jake Everett of Buford shot a 44 on Tuesday, but the Wolves placed third with 191, losing a tight one to Jackson County (187) and Jefferson (190) at the Traditions.

Hebron out duels Social Circle

HOSCHTON - Led by Hunter Bagley's 49, Hebron beat Social Circle 224 to 246 on Tuesday at Reunion.


Mill Creek wins three-way battle with Brookwood and Parkview

HOSCHTON - Mill Creek finished with a team score of 74 to beat both Brookwood and Parkview on Tuesday at Hamilton Mill.

Emilie Burger led the Hawks with a 36 while Jennifer Nam added a round of 38 for Mill Creek. Parkview, which was second with a score of 80, received a 38 from Jenna Peatross and a 42 from Amanda Xu.

Lisa Pakerson and Caitlin Noah each had 49s for Brookwood in the Broncos' third-place finish of 98.

Johnson leads Buford in win

BRASELTON - Abby Johnson finished with a 41 on Tuesday in helping Buford finish with 96 to beat both Jefferson (99) and Jackson County (117) at the Traditions.

Hebron holds off Social Circle

HOSCHTON - Hebron beat Social Circle 135 to 140 on Tuesday at Reunion. Joela Rowland was low scorer for Hebron with a 67.


GAC 9, North Forsyth 3

CUMMING - Scotty Smith scored three goals on Tuesday as Greater Atlanta Christian beat North Forsyth 9-3. Blake Guy and Christian Fretz added two goals each as GAC improved to 5-8.
