BUFORD - A Sugar Hill man was identified by Gwinnett police Friday as the deceased driver involved in a Thursday morning wreck in which a second motorist allegedly was under the influence of alcohol.
Police say Averardo Lopez, 39, was hit by Nicholas Schnepper, 21, as Lopez attempted to make a U-turn on Buford Highway near Enterprise Drive. Lopez was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital after being cut out of his car by Gwinnett firefighters. He died Thursday afternoon. A Flowery Branch resident, Schnepper was arrested Thursday on DUI and first-degree vehicular manslaughter charges. He was also charged with possessing marijuana and driving with an open container. Police say he could face additional charges. He is currently being held in the Gwinnett County Jail without bond.More like this story
