Police: Man shot protecting mother

DECATUR - Police in Decatur said a man was shot and killed while trying to keep his mother from being robbed.

DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said the owner of a theater was leaving the business around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when she was approached by a gunman who demanded her purse.

Police said the woman's son, Mac Mayer, 36, stepped in and was shot by the suspect, who is still being sought.

Parish said the son died after being taken to the hospital.

Robbery suspect, wife found dead

BRUNSWICK - Police are investigating the apparent double suicide of a woman and her husband, who was wanted in connection with a Florida armed robbery.

Police say 51-year-old Ronald Isaac Flannery and 52-year-old Judy Lee Flannery were found dead in a Brunswick motel on Wednesday.

Georgia officials declined to say how the couple died. But police from Fernandina Beach, Fla., where Ronald Flannery was wanted, said it appears the couple committed suicide together.

Fernandina Beach police say the man robbed a pharmacy at gunpoint Friday. Authorities are searching the motel room - which is 60 miles north of where the robbery took place - for evidence linking him to the crime.

The bodies were sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab for autopsies.

Sheriff: Two stole car on test drive

VILLA RICA - Two men were hospitalized Thursday after allegedly stealing a car on a dealership test drive, robbing the salesman and crashing during a high-speed police chase along Interstate 20 west of Atlanta.

The two went to John Bleakley Ford in Lithia Springs and asked to test-drive a Ford Mustang, Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller said. One pulled a knife on the salesman who accompanied them and made him withdraw $100 from an ATM, Miller said.

They allegedly taped up and dropped the salesman off at a park-and-ride lot, but the salesman managed to use his cell phone to call 911.

Officers chased the car west on I-20 at speeds of more than 100 mph before the crash at an exit.

Steven Swords of Albertville, Ala., and Robert Lewis of Ellijay were charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and other charges, Miller said.

Lewis was taken to Tanner Medical Center-Villa Rica and Swords was taken by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
