SUGAR HILL - Sugar Hill officials broke ground recently on a large mixed-use park that will include soccer fields, tennis courts and two miles of walking trails.
Pirkle Park - named after Sugar Hill Mayor Gary Pirkle - is envisioned to be 55 acres of recreational bliss, according to Don Kelemen, community relations director for the city.
Located on Austin Garner Road and Suwanee Dam Road in west Sugar Hill, the park will also include a putt-putt golf course, a snack bar and clubhouse with a tennis pro shop. In addition, several bridges will cross existing streams.
"We're pretty excited about this one," Kelemen said. "We're on our way."
The purpose of Pirkle Park is to offer residents a more centralized recreation experience, Kelemen said.
"This is a recreation city, this is what we're known for," he said. "This is just another way for our citizens to enjoy the outdoors."
Engineering firm Precision Planning Inc. created the master plan for the park, which is scheduled to be completed early next year.
A general contractor has started preliminary work on the property, Kelemen said.
