GAC's Vick, Winder-Barrow's Beggs get awards

Greater Atlanta Christian's Tim Vick and Winder-Barrow's Jeff Beggs each received an award this past weekend from the Georgia Athletic Directors Association at its annual conference in Savannah.

Vick was selected as the state's overall athletic director of the year while Beggs was named the top AD in Class AAAA.

'Prep Rally' features soccer, baseball stars

"Gwinnett Prep Rally," a Gwinnett County high school sports TV program, airs highlights from Shiloh-Parkview girls soccer, Mill Creek-North Gwinnett baseball, Brookwood-Grayson soccer and Mill Creek-Duluth boys soccer on this week's show.

Featured athletes include Duluth's Jorge Torres and Parkview's Kim Spence in soccer and Mill Creek's Matthew Grimes in baseball.

Brookwood football to host golf tourney

The Brookwood Football Alumni Association will host its third annual alumni golf tournament on May 17 at The Woodlands at Chateau Elan. Tee-off is at 2 p.m.

The event, which costs $100 per golfer, benefits two scholarships, the Michael Mercier Scholarship and the Doug Pickett Scholarship.

Force sign DB Whitley, put DE Thomson on IR

FLOWERY BRANCH - The Georgia Force signed defensive back James Whitley and placed defensive end Will Thompson on injured reserve Wednesday.

Whitley, a 5-foot-11, 185-pounder, is entering his second season in the AFL after starting six games for the Force in 2007. He had 361/2 tackles, seven passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one interception in his rookie season. Whitley had eight tackles, one forced fumble, one interception and one pass breakups in Georgia's divisional playoff game against Philadelphia last July.

Thompson started two games for Georgia this season and posted 31/2 tackles. Thompson is a native of Warner Robins, where he played football at Northside High School and played four years at the University of Georgia.

Walsh hired as Knicks' president

NEW YORK - Donnie Walsh was hired Wednesday as president of the New York Knicks, and said he would wait a few days before deciding on Isiah Thomas' future with the organization.

The Knicks hired the longtime Indiana Pacers executive and gave him complete power to oversee basketball operations of a team finishing its seventh straight losing season.

'His mandate is clear - do whatever is necessary to turn this team around,' Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan said.
