Political notebook: Conway hosts golf tourney

A couple of months ago, Butch Conway told us he's ruled out a run for county chairman in favor of seeking a fourth term as sheriff.

Next week, he'll be in fundraising mode.

The "Committee to Re-elect Butch Conway, Sheriff," is hosting a golf tournament to raise money for the race.

"It'll be fun, and everybody's welcome," Conway said. "You don't have to be very good to play in the tournament or to beat me."

Sheriff Butch Conway's Fall Golf Classic has become an annual event, although proceeds at times went to charity.

Monday's event is the first big fundraising for Conway's 2008 campaign. He said about 120 people have signed up, and he expects to raise $30,000 to $40,000.

Individual players can sign up for $150, and law enforcement officers are given a rate of $100.

The tournament is slated to start at 10 a.m. at the Woodlands Course at Chateau Elan.

GOP barbecue

This Sunday, the GOP is hosting a fundraiser to get a head-start on 2008.

Dubbed the "Pre-Victory Party 2008," the barbecue will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at Collins Hill Park. Officials said they hope to make the barbecue an annual event.

In addition to a straw presidential poll, the picnic will include a patriotic photo booth, door prizes, a coloring contest and face painting for the kids. Catering will be provided by Famous Dave's Bar-B-Que.

Admission is $15 in advance, $20 at the door and $5 for children 12 and under.

Cagle visit

Don't forget, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, will appear tonight at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce.

Cagle could take the opportunity to talk about the transportation funding proposal he announced earlier this week with Speaker Glenn Richardson.

The event is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
