Norcross woman drowns in Lanier

LAKE LANIER - A daylong search at Lake Lanier for a Norcross swimmer ended Wednesday when the woman's body was found offshore in eight feet of water.

Meiyu Lin, 39, was swimming with friends Tuesday afternoon when she submerged and did not come back up, police said.

Divers found the woman's body about 20 feet from the shore nearly a day later on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident appears to be accidental, and no foul play is suspected, police said.

"(Lin) swam out to assist another swimmer who was having difficulties," said Hall County Sheriff's Office Maj. Jeff Strickland. "She went under and did not resurface."

Lin was found at an island just west of a location known as the Van Pugh Day Use Area.

Sheriff's Office divers searched for Lin until nightfall Tuesday, when the search was suspended for diver safety, Strickland said. The search resumed at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The incident remains under investigation, Strickland said.

A total of eight people have drowned at Lake Lanier in 2007, according to a Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesperson.

Most recently, a 21-year-old Norcross man drowned Aug. 17 for unknown reasons near Van Pugh North Park.
