Traffic to shift on Ga. 20

GRAYSON - Traffic will shift to newly constructed lanes on Ga. Highway 20 on Tuesday, a milestone in the long-awaited widening south of Lawrenceville.

If weather allows, road crews will direct the shift at 9 a.m. in a 1.5-mile eastbound section between Plantation Boulevard and Hillside Drive, state Department of Transportation officials announced.

"By shifting lanes, we will have room to reconstruct the old lanes of (Ga.) 20 to form the new westbound lanes. This is one of several traffic shifts on the project," said DOT area engineer Harold Mull. "Please slow down and give yourself extra time to travel through the work zone as conditions are continually changing. Remember to slow down because all fines are doubled in a work zone."

Crews are widening a 4.2-mile stretch of the road - from Plantation Boulevard to Cooper/Ozora Road. The $26.8 million project is expected to be complete by the end of August 2008.

Plans are also in the works for the widening of the road from Cooper/Ozora Road to the Gwinnett County line in Loganville as well as a future phase planned for a Sugar Hill stretch.
