DACULA - About 60 golfers participated Tuesday in the Kiwanis Club of North Gwinnett's annual golf tournament, a fundraiser for scholarships given each year to seniors at North Gwinnett, Mill Creek and Buford high schools.
Last year, the service club gave away $11,000 in scholarships - $4,000 each to North Gwinnett and Mill Creek and $3,000 to Buford students, said Jody Lail, the president-elect of the club and the tournament coordinator. About half of the scholarship money is raised each year in the tournament, Lail said. The rest is earned during the annual Vidalia onion sale, he said. The Kiwanis Club has also donated money to organizations such as the Gwinnett Children's Shelter. Lail said the club gave the shelter $20,000 two years ago to furnish its new building. The club is always looking for new members who enjoy helping the community in which they live, Lail said.
