ATLANTA - Wesleyan's Kelsey Sanders scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Wolves held off Westminster for a 2-1 win Saturday.
After Sanders gave Wesleyan the lead, the Wolves got into a pack of trouble in the bottom of the same inning. Westminster had the bases loaded and no outs, but Wesleyan (5-9) got out of the jam and collected the win.
Paige Hamlin struck out nine and got the win.
Emily Worthington was 1-for-2 and Erin Hall earned two walks and scored a run.
Greenbrier 4, Collins Hill 3
EVANS - A controversial call by the umpire at home allowed Greenbrier to collect a 4-3 win over Collins Hill on Saturday.
Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and two away, Greenbriar hit the ball to third and the Eagles' only play was at the plate. Collins Hill's catcher was kneeling on top of home and the throw was in time, but Greenbriar's runner was called safe.
The Eagles dropped to 9-5-1 with the loss.
Lindsay Ellenburg scored two runs. Alexa Lewis was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cat Tarvin and Caroline Cooper were both 2-for-4 with an RBI. Danielle Almeida was 1-for-2 with a run.
GAC runner-up at Darlington Invitational
ROME - Greater Atlanta Christian rattled off five straight wins before falling to South Forsyth in the Gold Division finals Saturday at the Darlington Invitational in Rome.
The Spartans improved to 19-4 and had two players named to the all-tournament team - Katie Rowell and Alex Shelton. Rowell had 21 kills and 34 digs in the tournament while Shelton collected 98 assists and 13 aces.
Amanda Komisarow led the way with 44 kills and Anjelica Wilcox kicked in 26 kills and nine blocks.
GAC beat West Hall (25-8, 25-15), Lafayette (28-26, 25-20), Cartersville (25-15, 25-20) and Prince Avenue (25-9, 25-15) to earn a spot in the gold division. There, the Spartans defeated Harris County (25-23, 25-17) and lost in the final to Class AAAAA South Forsyth (25-19, 25-20).
Grayson makes semis of silver bracket
LOGANVILLE - Grayson defeated Tucker to earn a spot in the semifinals of the Silver Bracket at the Collin Hill Classic on Saturday at Grayson.
The Rams were then beaten by Parkview,
It was the second day of the tournament and Nicki Hannon led the way for Grayson with a cumulative 29 kills, 13 blocks and eight aces. Manyi Ati had 21 kills and 91⁄2 blocks. Ansley Cash had 40 assists.
Wesleyan wins four, drops two at Block Party
ATLANTA - Wesleyan picked up four wins and two losses over two days of play at the Lovett Block Party this weekend.
The Wolves opened with a win over Hoover, Ala., (25-11, 25-12), lost to McGill Toolen (23-25, 25-15, 13-15) and then ripped off three more victories before falling to Marist.
Wesleyan beat Chamblee (25-14, 25-14), Centennial (25-19, 25-14) and Landmark Christian (25-10, 25-9). The Wolves, now 25-4 overall, dropped a close three-game match to Marist (25-12, 22-25, 12-15).
In total, Anne Marie Armstrong recorded 52 kills and 35 digs. Betsy Smith racked up 66 kills and 33 digs, and Maggie Smith collected 90 assists during the tournament.
Norcross falls in bronze title match
ATLANTA - Norcross dropped a pair of matches on the first day of the Lovett Block Party on Friday, but battled back on Saturday to earn a place in the Bronze Bracket finals. The Blue Devils (13-6 overall) were beaten there by the No. 1 team in Class AAA, Columbus.
Norcross opened with an extremely close loss to Landmark Christian (25-22, 25-27, 24-26) and then fell to Blufton (25-20, 25-17) and eventual tournament champion Westminster (25-16, 25-21).
But the Blue Devils came back with wins over Class AAAA No. 3 St. Pius (25-15, 10-25, 15-13), Baylor of Chattanooga (25-15, 25-21) and Class AAA No. 5 Oconee County (25-17, 28-30, 15-7).
