Students honored for excellence in media production

More than 100 Gwinnett students recently earned "Excellence in Media Production" awards from the 2007 International Student Media Festival for live-action

video, animation, mixed media and sequential still productions.

In addition to the awards for excellence, "Best of Festival" awards were also presented to two photographic essays from Phoenix High School, titled "Ella" and "Observe." "Ella" was produced by Phoenix High student Ximena Partida Garcia, while Phoenix High student Ryckie Fernandez produced "Observe."

The International Student Media Festival is an annual program that provides teachers an opportunity to motivate, educate and inspire their students to excellence in their academic pursuits through the creative use of media technology.

The award-winning students and their parents are invited to attend the ISMF Media Festival Award Ceremony on Oct. 25 to 27 in Anaheim, Calif.

The 2008 Gwinnett County System Level Student Media Festival will be held March 14 at the Instructional Support Center in Suwanee.

Gwinnett Tech grads display photos at Stone Mountain Gwinnett Technical College's graduating commercial photography students are displaying their portrait, still life, photojournalism, landscape and fine arts projects at the ART Station in Stone Mountain.

The show runs through Oct. 28 at the ART Station, and prints of the photography will be available for sale.

"This show represents two years of hard work and creative vision with a sample of the student's portfolio on display at ART Station," said Kim Harkins, commercial photography program director at Gwinnett Tech.

Beginning Nov. 7, the featured portfolios will be on display at the Media Gallery on Gwinnett Tech's campus.

Scholarship available for Art Institute

High school seniors with a passion for fashion can compete this fall for a full-tuition scholarship to study fashion and retail management at The Art Institute of Atlanta.

The Art Institutes' Passion for Fashion Scholarship Competition, open to seniors in the United States and Canada, was created to encourage and reward young fashion design and fashion marketing, merchandising and retail management talent to continue their education in these fields.

"Jobs in marketing, merchandising and management in the fashion industry continue to offer excellent opportunities for students interested in this field," said Mary Jo Bershad, department chair of fashion and retail management at the Art Institute. "There are so many wonderful fashion courses in high schools today, and many students see a career in fashion within their reach."

Although the national competition has two categories - fashion design and fashion marketing, merchandising and retail management - The Art Institute of Atlanta offers only fashion and retail management, so students wishing to enroll in that location must enter in that category only. The grand prize in each category includes a full-tuition scholarship to one of The Art Institute's locations offering a fashion program, plus an all-expense-paid trip to New York City for Fashion Week in February and a "meet and greet" at Seventeen magazine's offices.

To be eligible, students must be seniors in high school and plan to enter college in summer or fall 2008. Applicants must complete an entry form, have a minimum grade point average of 2.0, write a short essay describing their interest in fashion and submit an original product or merchandising plan (the fashion design category requires a finished, originally designed evening-wear garment and process book).
