LAWRENCEVILLE - Another Gwinnett son has died in Iraq.
Spc. Christopher Gabriel Patton, 21, of Lawrenceville, died Saturday in Baghdad, Iraq, in a noncombat related incident, according to a U.S. Department of Defense press release.
The circumstances surrounding the death of the 2005 Central Gwinnett High School graduate are under investigation, said Nancy Bourget, a spokeswoman for Fort Hood, the Texas installation where Patton was assigned.
Contacted through Wages & Sons funeral home, Patton's family declined to be interviewed. Funeral arrangements were not complete Wednesday.
Bourget said Patton joined the Army as an infrantryman in June 2005. In December 2005, he was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Calvary Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood. He was deployed to Iraq in November 2006.
Patton was awarded the National Defense Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon and the Parachute Badge, Bourget said.
