LAWRENCEVILLE - Elections this season will be family affairs, after some final additions to the ballot on the last day of qualifying Friday.
Norcross Mayor Lillian Webb will be joined on the ballot by her son. John, who is seeking a council post. And Michael Lovelady, running against Webb for the second time, will also share the ballot with his son, Gary, running for a different council post. Bucky Johnson also qualified for the mayoral election Friday. John Webb was joined by former councilman Josh Bare in opposing incumbent councilman Charlie Riehm, and Gary Lovelady makes it a three-man race with Craig Newton and incumbent Terry Bowie for the other seat. Brothers are on the ballot in Statham. There, John Aaron added his name to the ballot already occupied by his brother, incumbent Mike Aaron. Joseph Hayes and incumbent Hattie Thrasher are also running for council, where the top two vote-getters will win. And in Auburn, added to the council hopefuls was Elbert Scouten, whose wife, Donna, is already on the board. He joins in the race with Peggy Langley, Tauheed Ferguson, former school board member Beverly Kelley and Dorissa Shackelford, who served on the council with her husband, Jimmy, prior to his death in 2004. Earlier this week, Mark Burson, the son of long-time Lawrenceville councilman Mahlon Burson, who retired last year, qualified for the ballot against Bob Clark. On Friday, former councilman Eddie Oakes squared off against P.K. Martin. And, of course, there's former Loganville Mayor Mike Jones's son, Austin, who is unopposed for his second term in that city. While there aren't any familial bonds there, Roger Wehunt joined the race for Winder mayor Friday. He resigned his seat on the Barrow County Commission to join the three-man race. In Bethlehem, where Mayor Wayne Ridgeway qualified for council and Councilman Sandy McNab qualified for mayor, no one qualified for two city council seats. An official with the city said she would check on how to handle the situation after the Labor Day holiday. For a complete list of the qualifiers, see Sunday's Gwinnett Daily Post.
