WINDER - Barrow County homeowners might not see a property tax increase. The Board of Commissioners expects to set a lowered millage rate during Tuesday's meeting.
Property taxes are tied to the millage rate. Taxes are calculated by multiplying the assessed value of a property by the millage. A mill is one-tenth of one cent.
The 2007 millage rate stands at 9.609. Because property reassessment shows an increase in value, the board expects to set the 2008 millage at 9.336.
"So there will not be a tax increase," said Commission Chairman Doug Garrison. "It's based on quality growth working for us and paying dividends and we are still opening up a new courthouse, jail and animal control facility."
